What’s in a Name?
LEAGUE:
“An association of persons united by common
interests or working for common goals.”*
Our common interest is making lives better for women and families in the metropolitan area and becoming a source of intellectual, spiritual and social enrichment for our members and the wider community.
Our goal is to empower women by offering innovative social services and loving support to women at every stage of their lives.
CATHOLIC:
(with a capital “C”): “associated with
the universal Catholic Church.”*
(with a small “c”): “broad in sympathies,
holding a liberality of views”*
Our founders were lay Catholic women whose desire to form a self-governing women’s organization to address the needs of women was encouraged by Archbishop John Ireland in 1911.
The League in 2011 is a Vatican II kind of place, open in mind, heart and spirit. Membership is extended to all women who share our mission and ideals. Stimulating programs broaden and deepen our understanding of current challenges and opportunities for today’s woman.
WOMEN:
“An adult female person”*
The League is an organization that believes in women: in their unlimited potential; in their power, as full partners with men, to affect constructive change in our world and in our Church; and in their obligation to use their many gifts in joyful response to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
