Volunteer Opportunities
Social Services
By Your Side Mentoring
League members offer friendly one-to-one support through supportive contact with a single parent student, in collaboration with the College of St. Catherine. The League also provides funds for childcare and emergencies.
First Impression
Low-income women seeking first-time employment, or who are re-entering the workforce, receive clothing and accessories in preparation for interviews and work. The project works with over twenty area programs.
Tuesday Club
League members provide lunch, games and entertainment for socially isolated elderly persons at the Downtown Center.
Welcome Home Tote Bags
In cooperation with Amicus, the League provides handsome tote bags filled with needed personal items for women leaving correctional facilities in the metropolitan area.
Children’s Book Express
The League collects and distributes new and lightly used books to students in five Catholic elementary schools in the Twin Cities as well as to women and their children in the Access to Success program at the Minneapolis campus of the College of St. Catherine. These books are taken home to be kept and read by the school children and their family members. Distributions are made 3-4 times a year. The collection box is located inside the rear door of the LCW’s Downtown Center at 207 South Ninth Street in Minneapolis. All are welcome to drop off books.
Mitten Tree Project
Purchase new books for the children at Northside Child Development Center at Christmastime. Choose a paper mitten or mittens with a child’s name and age on it, buy an appropriate book or books and return to the League.
Inner-City Tutoring
League members tutor children in grades K-8 at two or three inner city schools, Risen Christ, St. Peter Claver and John Paul II. Teachers for Junior Great Books and Art Adventure series (once a week for 6-8 weeks) are also welcome. Library work is also needed at John Paul II. Times are flexible.
New Projects in 2011
Minneapolis Network (MN)
One of the League’s newest service projects, Minneapolis Network (MN) finds us partnering with Patchwork Quilt, Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ), Ascension Parish and School, John Paul II School, and other organizations offering enrichment opportunities for children and fostering a sense of community with our neighbors in the north and northeast areas of our city.
Vets Outreach
Another social service initiated during our centennial year is an outreach to women veterans in cooperation with the VA and several other agencies addressing the unique needs of returning women vets.
